Peter Matthiessen, a quote from whose book “The Snow Leopard” gave me the name for this site, died last week at the age of 86. Matthiessen’s work was one of my earliest introductions to the idea that travel writing could be both deeply meaningful and deeply personal, and reading The Snow Leopard (twice in a row) while trekking in Nepal in 2008 was an experience that subtly changed the course of my life. If you’re curious as to what meaningful writing about meaningful travel looks like, Matthiessen’s work makes an excellent place to start.
